In our Germany Studio, we're now exploring concepts at the intersection of climate tech and real estate. We're looking for an experienced operator with entrepreneurial ambitions to lead a new venture as Founder & CEO with our investment and the full backing of Founders Factory.
The Opportunity
To reduce the high emissions and energy consumption of its real estate, Germany has set direct targets for 45% of its entire stock to be renovated by 2030 and 90% by 2050. This means doubling the current renovation rate to at least 2%, but there are many barriers to these renovations, including high upfront costs, complex regulations, lack of qualified workers, and a data-intensive planning and design process.
A Retrofitting Platform for Private Landlords
With only 47% of the population living in an owner-occupied dwelling, Germany has one of the lowest homeownership rates in Europe and makes up the biggest rental residential real estate market. More than 60% of these rental flats (roughly 14 million dwellings) are owned by private owners rather than big companies.
We're currently exploring the following solution: A retrofitting platform that puts the scale, knowledge and expertise of larger landlords who retrofit at scale at the service of smaller private landlords, managing the entire end-to-end retrofitting process from quoting and planning through to financing, project management and execution. This will help private landlords not only get a fair rent increase to pay for the work, but increase their rental returns and drive fair value of their properties.

What we're looking for

• Experienced founder, builder or operator, capable of operating from zero to one
• Unique market insight, top 1% skills or other advantage that makes you a suitable and compelling founder in this space
• Proven ability to build a world-class team, attract customers and investors
• Evidence of thriving in ambiguous environments and a high aptitude for calculated risks
• A clear vision for the opportunity (including product direction) - with the drive and expertise to execute on it
• High IQ and EQ - strong opinions loosely held
• Deep understanding of the German market and German language skills (fluency)
