Excellent research and innovation are at the centre of the work of the HHI - Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications. We are a world leader in researching mobile and optical communication networks and systems, as well as machine learning, computer vision and compressing digital videos. As part of our project with the start-up TestBlu, we are looking for a Student Assistant in AI Machine Learning to support the development, validation, and optimization of AI models for cfDNA-based early cancer detection within the CaniSense platform. Ihre Aufgaben


  • Preprocess, clean, and structure sequencing datasets for AI training and validation

  • Conduct exploratory data analysis and feature engineering

  • Develop, train, and optimize machine learning models for cancer detection and classification

  • Run experiments, perform hyperparameter tuning, and evaluate model performance

  • Document methodologies, results, and validation metrics in a structured and reproducible manner

  • Support integration of validated AI models into the CaniSense platform

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of model robustness, scalability, and accuracy

    What you contribute



Ihr Profil


  • Enrolled Masters student in AI, Machine Learning, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or related field

  • Strong Python skills (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, PyTorch or TensorFlow)

  • Experience with data preprocessing and model evaluation techniques

  • Understanding of statistical modeling and experimental design

  • Structured, analytical mindset with strong documentation skills

  • Experience working with neural networks,

  • Experience developing Explainable AI features

  • Experience working with biological data

  • Knowledge of model validation in healthcare or life sciences

  • Familiarity with version control (Git), Jira and collaborative development

    The position is initially limited to 1 year. An extension is explicitly desired.

    The monthly working time is 80 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis.
