Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The Center for Housing and Community Studies (CHCS) is a community-engaged, applied research institution specializing in geospatial research and multi-modal data collection and mixed-method analysis, used to develop community-informed solutions to social problems around housing and neighborhoods for governments, nonprofits, foundations and institutions of higher education. We also incorporate grounded solutions to provide education and outreach promoting individual through systems-level change. The Center for Housing and Community Studies (CHCS) Community Advocate will oversee and coordinate a series of projects that assist organizations and residents in low wealth communities that are working to build grassroots capacity. The Community Advocate will serve as project coordinator for the Tenant Academy. The position will also support research, planning, and evaluation studies conducted by the CHCS by means of qualitative data collection and community-engagement. The Community Advocate will also assist the PI in developing new proposals and projects to support the long-term goals of the Center. The Community Advocate will attend regular meetings with staff, community partners, and stakeholders. The Community Advocate will help organize and facilitate community forums (Housing Hangouts), meetings, and other events related to the mission of CHCS.,

The Community Advocate will serve as the Tenant Academy Project Coordinator, working with CHCS Director, other program coordinators, and CHCS staff as well as a community advisory committee to refine and adapt the curriculum of the Tenant Academy for various low income and at-risk communities in the Triad.

The Community Advocate will be responsible for refinement of syllabus, tailoring of organizing manual, recruitment of cohorts of tenants, recruitment of workshop speakers, delivery workshop, and the evaluation/tracking of outcomes. In addition, CHCS will work with the Center for New North Carolinians Interpreter Access Project to create one day mini-academies for immigrant and refugee communities.

The Community Advocate will also work with community partners to develop ongoing technical assistance to graduates.

The Community Advocate will work with CHCS Director, other program coordinators, and CHCS staff to design, administer, and analyze surveys, oral histories, interviews, and focus groups for funded planning, assessment, and evaluation studies.

At any given time, CHCS will be engaged in multiple studies across NC and in other states.

Community engagement support will include assistance in data collection, analysis, and authoring reports in coordination with other team members as needed to support the efforts of CHCS.

Independently, the Community Advocate will develop relationships with appropriate stakeholders internally at UNCG and externally in the community building network and collaborative ties with local organizations and community leaders in order to assist in CHCS mission.

Develop proposals to expand support for long-term sustainability and expansion of the Community Engagement and Advocacy Unit.
