The Academic Support-Focus Counselor provides and coordinates clinical services designed to minimize the impact of mental illness and emotional distress on the academic and personal functioning of at-risk students. The position reflects a University and Divisional commitment to providing a coordinated team approach to meeting the increasing demand for mental health assessment, crisis and personal counseling for students as well as for consultation to University staff, faculty, administrators and parents.
The Academic Support-Focus Counselor is a 12-month clinical psychologist or social worker/clinical professional counselor position at the Lakeshore Campus office of Wellness Center (WC), a unit within the Division of Student Development. This full-time Wellness Center professional will be embedded within the Sullivan Center of the Lakeshore Campus and has as their core functions providing enhanced counseling and consultation access and supporting students and staff in the Lake Shore Campus's Student Academic Services (SAS) unit. Working in close collaboration with the Director of Counseling and the counseling team, this counselor will provide on-site individual counseling, urgent care assessments, group counseling, workshops and outreach to students accessing support from the numerous student services offices at the Sullivan Center.
Devises and delivers variety of outreach services at Sullivan center and other locations as needed, developing key relationships with students and staff in SAS offices, including: the (proposed) Office of Black Student Success; Student Accessibility Center; Academic Advising; Academic Enrichment and Retention; the Tutoring Center; office of new Student Programs; the Financial Aid Office, and other SAS offices.
-Offers psychoeducation workshops to students on intersection of mental health, well-being, and academic learning skills -Offers support group and other group interventions based on assessment of need -Provides group and individual coaching and consultation to student and professional staff around supporting students in distress within the scope of their roles -Conducts outreach and other student learning programs, as requested, orientation sessions for new students and emergency and postvention support to the campus community, as needed. -Develops and implements trainings on mental health awareness for student services professional and student staff. -Stays current on relevant research and best practices regarding psychological services to the college student population. 3. Provides crisis management services.
- Consults with Sullivan- Center staff providing services to students who exhibit mental health symptoms or whose mental health and emotional distress are impeding their ability to succeed academically. -Provides walk-in crisis and risk assessment, urgent and emergent counseling services to students in acute distress. -Develops safety plans and facilitates psychiatric hospitalizations as necessary. -Supervises trainees with clinical crises and urgent care situations. -Provides after-hours, weekend and holiday coverage 24/7 on a rotating basis with other Wellness Center staff members.
Ihr Profil
Master's degree in counseling, social work, or related field, with demonstrated experience and skill in mental health and /or other outreach work required. -minimum of 4 to 6 years of supervised experience with a college or young adult population required., Passion for and experience working with students from marginalized groups and dedication to partnering with relevant campus advocates -Demonstrated experience providing therapy to communities affected by racial and/or historical trauma -Evidence of strong self-awareness of how one's own identities and life experiences impact counseling strategies and interactions with students -demonstrated consultation skills -current State of Illinois licensure, or ability to attain Illinois license within a reasonable timeframe. -experience in crisis management preferred; experience with more severe psychopathology also preferred -demonstrated ability to apply theory to practice -demonstrated ability to quickly create a trusting, supportive rapport with students -ability to develop and deliver presentations to large and small groups -demonstrated effective leadership, management and team building skills required in working with various groups and departments to coordinate referrals of students needed for case management services. -minimum of 4 to 6 years of supervised experience with a college or young adult population required. -strong personal and professional resonance with the university mission
Preferred qualifications:
In addition to the above, the ideal candidate would also have a background in the treatment of some of the issues common with the college student population, including eating disorders, mood disorders, first psychosis, trauma, sexual abuse, substance abuse, first generation college students, and/or LGBT+ issues. Facility with integrative models of brief psychotherapy, familiarity with college populations or previous experience in a college counseling center preferred.
Certificates/Credentials/LicensesValid Sate of Illinois license as a clinical psychologist, LCSW or LCPC. Computer Skills Ability to use electronic medical records (EMR experience preferred)
