Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded TRIO program that serves first-generation, low-income college students through academic skills instruction, counseling, and tutoring services. This position reports to the Director of the Office of TRiO Programs. The Office of TRiO Programs is included among the Educational Opportunity Programs within the Division of Student Success under the Office of the Provost.
Position Summary
The Assistant Director (AD) for Academic Skills position is a grant-funded position that serves students in the SSS program. The AD is responsible for instructing SSS students in one-on-one sessions on academic skills strategies, supervising graduate assistant(s) that also provide skills instruction, and coordinating the learning lab and work-study lab assistants. The AD works closely with SSS colleagues in counseling and tutoring to make sure students in the program are receiving the support they need to successfully complete a college degree. Employees will plan and participate in student events and college tours in NC and outside NC. This travel may require driving students in rental vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications
- The Assistant Director for Academic Skills must hold a Master's degree in Education, English, Reading, or related field and must have at least three years of effective teaching, tutoring, or TRiO work experience.
- Sensitivity to the academic needs of first-generation college students is necessary.

- Oversee the academic skills instructional component: design and implement program activities, orient new students to the component and program, assess student needs, compose and address student action plans based on academic skills needs, and monitor and record progress of each student in the program.

- Manage the learning lab and maintain technology, software, and other educational materials for student use. Recruit, hire, train, and supervise federal work-study lab assistant positions.

Essential Tasks
- Oversee academic eligibility decisions for all SSS applicants, manage student intake process (orientation, assessment completion, addition to Starfish and Canvas), and maintain Starfish and Canvas platforms for the SSS program.
