  Career perspectives

  The Master's course aims towards educating artists who are able to work as conductors in all professional fields that music theatres and concert halls offer. Due to the complexity of the profession, graduates have to possess substantiated artistic, educational as well as social competence to master the challenge to work as a music director. One special educational goal is to prepare Master's graduates to take over managerial functions. Language requirements

  Foreign students whose native language is not German must provide evidence that their knowledge of German is sufficient for their chosen course. For the Master's degree (Orchestra Conducting), students are required to have reached level B2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Applicants' linguistic competence will be established during the aptitude test.

  Please apply via our application website by uploading the required documents and application videos by 15th of April for the following winter semester and 15th of November for the next following summer semester.

  1st round : Online procedure (ONE Video must be uploaded for each task )

  Conducting task

  J. Brahms: 1. Symphonie in c, 4. Movement (beginning till bar 118)

  If possible, the piece should be conducted with two pianos. (A recording with orchestra is possible.) The applicants should be clearly visible from the front to allow observation of the number of pianos being played. Recordings without sound will not be considered.

  Correpetition/Piano Excerpt Playing

  W.A. Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro, Nr. 15 Finale 2. Akt Esci omai (start from entrance Antonio, Allegro molto)

  The work is to be performed with vocal presentation (marking) of the vocal parts.

  Each video has to start with a short introduction (your name and your application number). The video has to be filmed in one take and live, which means the material must not be cut or post-edited. There is no need for professional video production. Videos taken with your mobile phone are absolutely fine.

  You will receive an e-mail with the results of the 1st round of the entrance examination. If you have passed the 1st round, you will be invited to the 2nd round which will take place in June for the winter semester and in January for the summer semester. The exact dates will be published under apply for studies.

  2nd round: Presence examination

  The skill to proficiently communicate rehearsal content verbally is an important aspect of the examination assessment.

For part 1 of the presence examination usually takes place with piano(s). If possible, a singer will be available. For part 2 of the presence examination, an instrumental ensemble is usually scheduled. Candidates have a rehearsal time of about 10 minutes for each of the two works.

Correpetition/Piano Excerpt Playing

• Prepared: With the invitation to the presence examination, applicants will be given a task for this part of the examination. The level of difficulty is based on works by R. Strauss (Rosenkavalier, Salome, Elektra, etc.) and R. Wagner (Tristan und Isolde, Meistersinger, Ring des Nibelungen, etc.).
• Prima Vista performance from from musical theatre or/and choral symphonic works, as well as a short section of a score. Candidates should demonstrate their ability to present the essential content of the work excerpts presented to them in a musically meaningful way on the piano. A vocal performance of the vocal parts is not necessary.

Ihr Profil

Basically, working as an orchestra conductor who has to meet the complex requirements of the professional market (sinfonia, opera, oratorio, operetta, musical etc.) means to effectively take over leadership. The artistic-educational process can only be successful if it is moderated by a qualified artistic personality. A conductor's persuasive power originates from an extensive theoretical knowledge (diversified repertoire analysis, knowledge about stylistic variety, instruments' specifics etc.), well-grounded aural skills, expressive body language and a wide experience in dealing with orchestras and ensembles (e. g. during rehearsals and knowledge about group dynamics). The Master's programme in Orchestra Conducting has been based on the Bachelor's course and thus on the competence students have gained from its modules. Several segments will be covered in depths during the Master's study. Knowledge expansion regards both the repertoire and study fields that had been introduced but not deepened during the first cycle. Furthermore, students may specialize in their preferred areas.

One crucial target of the study course is to emphasise practice-related components (rehearsals, practical working periods) and to enable students to work independently.

After all, the aim of the study course is to qualify graduates in such a way that they will be accepted by a professional market that has big expectations of conductors with regards to both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
