Internship on supporting ILO engagement in the UN Network on Migration

The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Ihre Aufgaben

The internship will support ILO/MIGRANT's involvement in the UN Network on Migration and with the Global Refugee Forum, as well as other interagency fora as relevant, with a particular focus on climate change and human mobility.

You will gain experience in the full range of ILO's engagement in these structures, across areas including labour migration; migration and development; migration and climate change; social protection; and refugees' inclusion into labour markets and their access to decent work.

You will improve your understanding of the international labour standards-based approach to migration, and its relationship to the overall context of safe, orderly and regular migration as well as to policy guidance related to working in crisis and forced displacement contexts.

You will learn about how discussions on climate change integrate human mobility considerations, including in the context of the Conference of Parties of the UNFCCC.

You will develop insights on the functioning of interagency processes within the United Nations, and how major international summits are prepared and run.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Required profile

The internship is within the ILO Labour Migration branch (MIGRANT), part of the Conditions of Work and Equality department (WORKQUALITY). The branch supports decent work for migrant workers and refugees through research and capacity-building activities promoting ratification and application of relevant international labour standards on labour migration and decent work; fair recruitment of migrant workers; social protection of migrant workers and refugees; skill development and recognition; return and reintegration of migrant workers; and support to ensure decent work for refugees and climate-related migrants.

MIGRANT is the focal point for ILO engagement in the Executive Committee of the United Nations Network on Migration, which helps guide the UN system-wide support for the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. The work of the Network is currently focused on preparations for the International Migration Review Forum, the first global review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.

MIGRANT has also closely been involved in coordinating ILO's engagement with the implementation of the Global Compact for Refugees, including through engagement in the Global Refugee Forum.

The ILO is also engaged in supporting work addressing the intersection between climate change and human mobility, including through the UNFCCC Task Force on Displacement and the UN Network Workstream on climate change, the GCM and the Paris Agreement., As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship., Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).

Ihr Profil

Background in migration studies, politics and international relations, or other related area.

The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 years ago (mandatory).

Experience

Experience volunteering or working on issues related to international migration and/ or mobility an advantage; experience in international environments an advantage; experience of supporting organization of meetings and events an advantage; knowledge of Microsoft Office and virtual meeting platforms (MS Teams, Zoom) an advantage. e.g. any relevant work experience and knowledge of IT would be an advantage.

Languages

Fluency in English is required; working knowledge of another of ILO's official languages (French, Spanish) an advantage., Adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills, especially written skills, and be able ability to work in a team; ability to multitask; research, drafting and notetaking and computer and social media skills.
