postdoctoral position in the area of stellar coronal emission (m/f/d)

The offered project in the research group of Prof. Poppenhäger shall investigate characteristics of the coronal emission of sun-like stars of mature main-sequence ages. X-ray observations will be used to determine the activity level and coronal temperatures of stars with abnormal rotational states and draw inferences about their magnetic braking and their influence on potential exoplanets.

Your activity:

The applicant shall hold a PhD degree in astrophysics at the time of starting the position. The applicant is expected to have an active research background in stellar magnetic activity with applications to exoplanets, backed up by relevant publications; scientific experience with quantifying deviations from canonical stellar spin-down laws is beneficial. The applicant is expected to have experience in working with data from XMM-Newton and Chandra. Experience in working in the low-photon-count regime is expected, in particular regarding the estimation of coronal temperatures, as well as experience in scientific coding with Python.

Your profile:

We aim to fill this position by December 2023. The salary will be based on the German public service scale (TV-L E13), and the duration of the position is three years. Benefits include employer contributions to medical and dental insurance, parental leave, and retirement benefits.
