English Instructor (APP)

The Academic Preparatory Program of the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani is accepting applications for the position of English Instructor for the 2023-2024 academic year which will begin November 13th for 10 weeks. We are seeking seasoned ESL/EFL teachers with specific experience teaching academic prep classes in post-secondary settings. The University is located in the Kurdish region in northern Iraq with excellent security, welcoming and hospitable local residents, and eager and capable students.

The preparatory program is an intensive program that prepares entry-level university students with academic English, critical thinking and study skills before entering their undergraduate program. Program levels range from beginner to upper intermediate and class materials and assessments are designed to address students' needs.

APP faculty are required to produce meaningful lesson plans and assessments that follow our APP Curriculum, teach these lessons to their assigned students for 10 weeks per term (3 terms per year), and grade assessments to determine their students' progress over the semester. Responsibilities include up to 20 contact hours each week teaching academic reading, writing, and grammar and up to an additional 30 hours of classroom prep.

Additional responsibilities include:

• Developing materials for the assigned courses

• Student advising

• Supporting in new student orientation and engagement programs

• Participating in service activities and faculty governance

• Maintaining professional development and scholarship

Ihr Profil

• A master's degree is required. A master's degree in TESOL, Linguistics, Education or English is preferred

• Native speaker in English

• At least 2 years of teaching experience at the postsecondary level

• Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching

• Evidence of outstanding teaching skills, including the ability to teach diverse populations and students for whom English is not a native language

Salary is competitive, and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Faculty are required to only work for 30 teaching weeks per year, with two additional working weeks required for preparation and review. Benefits include relocation and shipping allowances, faculty housing, transportation to and from campus, subsidized medical and dental insurance, and a summer travel allowance.
