Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The Office of Intercultural Engagement, a part of the Division of Student Affairs, supports our diverse student population in achieving their academic goals, by promoting student success through culturally rich experiences and affinity focused support. OIE provides opportunities for student-centered community building, leadership development, intergroup dialogues and cross-cultural engagements that prepare students for success in a diverse global society.



Ihre Aufgaben


The Assistant Director for Diverse Student Engagement is part of the team of dedicated professionals in the Office of Intercultural Engagement and reports to the Director of that office. This position focuses on engaging and retaining diverse student populations. The Assistant Director will work in collaboration with a host of colleagues across the campus, particularly the Division of Student Success, to examine retention data and based on that data, implement new initiatives, build an active network of support for students, and encourage student engagement with existing programs and services that support student success. An emphasis will be on programming that supports first-year students from diverse backgrounds, particularly those facing obstacles to retention., The Assistant Director for Diverse Student Engagement will supervise one graduate assistant. The Assistant Director will serve as instructor for the FYE 101 course to provide opportunity for student advising and mentorship. The course section may be geared toward the experiences of diverse students and their needs as they work to become competent, confident sophomores., Key Responsibility Supervision Essential Tasks

  • Supervise one graduate assistant who will be tasked with supporting the initiatives related to diverse student engagement, including direct outreach with students.

  • Convene weekly 1-1 meetings and team meetings.

  • Provide strategic direction and goals to ensure GA workloads align with office priorities.

  • Work with students to advise, mentor, educate, and support their success as students. Use engagement and retention data to identify students from diverse backgrounds who are in need of support.

  • Provide direct outreach to those students to schedule 1-1 meetings.

  • Create resources and programs and invite these students to participate in them.

  • Hold weekly programs for students.

  • Collaborate with campus partners to connect students to other campus resources.

  • It is estimated that this position will provide direct outreach for up to 25% of our new student population, based on prior year's academic performance data.

  • The programming will be open to all UNCG students, but will target students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Teach one course of FYE 101 annually.

  • Attend training and related meetings for course instructors.

  • Create lesson plans and syllabi; provide weekly instruction and office hours for availability; grade assignments and intervene with students who are not performing well in the course.

  • Work across departments and divisions to create new programs and coordinate existing programs and services that support the engagement and retention of diverse student populations.

  • Identify opportunities for partnerships and more collaborative approaches to supporting students.

  • Make resources available to students via social media, website, etc.

  • Plan, implement, manage programming budget, and effectively assess programmatic initiatives.

  • Plan weekly events that are open to all students (but target the identified students most in need) to help increase students' access to resources, sense of belonging and academic success.

  • Create an assessment plan to understand the impact of the program on students as it relates to the office goals.

  • Maintain, develop, and share current knowledge of research and best practices related to engaging and retaining diverse student populations.

  • Serve as a resource to campus partners and provide presentations as needed.

  • Engage in professional development initiatives to continue their own learning of best practices.

Ihr Profil


  • Master's degree in Higher Education or a closely related field of study, from a regionally accredited institution.

  • At least one year of directly related post-master's experience in a university setting, including direct experience with retention and/or cultural programs.

  • Demonstrated awareness of current theory and practice focused on diversity and inclusion issues related to post-secondary education.

  • Experience and proven ability developing, implementing and assessing successful programs and initiatives directly related to this position with a diverse college age population in a higher education setting.

  • Strong organizational skills and written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work with others and influence outcomes through collaboration.

  • Availability to work on evenings or weekends when needed.,

  • 3+ years post-master's experience in a related field.

  • Experience implementing programs and services in higher education and an understanding of best practices for student engagement and retention.

  • Experience in supervision.

  • Experience with budgets.

  • Experience working with data to inform decisions and programming.

  • Experience with classroom instruction or facilitating learning activities.
