The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School. Additional Details This Academic Advising Graduate Intern with theBryan Undergraduate Student Services Office at UNCG will focus on undergraduate student advising for course selection and registration. His or her primary role will be to assist the professional advising and support staff in serving the students, faculty, and staff of the Bryan School of Business and Economics. The Graduate Intern will be paired with a supervising professional mentor Advisor and will have direct interactions with students. There are opportunities for the intern to gain knowledge of the multitude of issues and problems that students bring to the advising office.
This part-time position offers an annual stipend, no tuition waiver - it cannot be combined with another fully-supported assistantship. Responsibilities:

Articulate academic degree requirements as well as any procedures and deadlines specific to business school majors and minors

Answer student questions by phone, email, and in person

Triage student needs, referring questions to support staff or mentor Advisor

Provide students with basic procedural information, explain degree requirements, assist students with scheduling and registration questions

Assist in presenting academic information to incoming and continuing students through special events

After mandatory training, independently advise students regarding business school major or minor requirements

Update student records through proficient use of electronic files and student information databases

Contribute to other advising projects as needed, Preference is given to candidates who can commit more than one academic year as there are separate opportunities for hourly paid work throughout the summer. Extensive training and supervision is provided each staff member - no exceptions! The Graduate Intern is expected to be an important part of the whole advising team.

To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:

Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
-
Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.

Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.

Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.,
-
Interest in or experience with liberal arts education or academic affairs in higher education
-
Interest in or experience working with a diverse student population and assisting others
-
Ability to maintain confidentiality as it legally and ethically required by FERPA and Bryan School procedures
-
Skill in working in a fast-paced and high-pressure work environment
-
Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, including public speaking
-
Skill in managing multiple responsibilities and deadlines
Preferred:
-
Enrolled in Master's program in student affairs, higher education administration, counseling, or related area of study [students in the first year of their program are preferred]

Knowledge of computer applications, including internet, word processing, databases, Canva and Photoshop

Knowledge of student development theory and practice
-
Ability to provide leadership and direction to undergraduate students

Interest or experience in classroom teaching and/or college student mentoring preferred
