Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The Student Health Service offers comprehensive primary and preventive health care to the UNCG University community. A strong commitment is made to maintaining professional excellence in addressing the health problems that are unique to this adolescent/young adult population in an effort to: -minimize loss to education for health reasons; -protect the health of individuals within the University community; -educate students toward the achievement of a healthy lifestyle; -contribute to the maintenance of a safe and healthy atmosphere in which students, faculty and staff live and work.

This entails providing psychiatric evaluations and medical assessments, prescribing medications and monitoring their use in a therapeutic setting. The person in this position must be up-to-date in new developments in psychotropics, side effects, and best practices. The SHS Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will provide psychiatric emergency intervention as needed. The SHS Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will facilitate the processing of both voluntary and involuntary hospitalizations as needed. The SHS Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will consult and collaborate with the clinical staff of The Counseling & Psychological Services, as well as the Medical Clinic staff to provide collaborative care for students as appropriate. The SHS Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will provide consultation and training on psychiatric issues to the clinical staff of both the Medical Clinic and the Counseling & Psychological Services. The SHS Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will become familiar with and utilize referral sources within the University and external community. The SHS Psychiatric Nurse practitioner will maintain a collaborative relationship with a collaborating psychiatrist and adhere to the licensing board's requirements regarding said collaboration. The individual in this position must be licensed to practice as a psychiatric nurse practitioner in the State of North Carolina and must have the appropriate DEA license. The individual in this position must provide and maintain a relationship with a community psychiatrist as their collaborating psychiatrist., Key Responsibility Psychiatry Essential Tasks
