Ihr Profil


  • a university degree with doctorate, preferably in the field of archaeology or geosciences

  • Experience in sclerochronology, oxygen isotope analysis

  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis

  • an open-minded, creative and collegial personality

  • a careful, independent, goal-oriented and structured way of working

  • Very good command of English

  • Good language skills in Italian or Greek are desirable

  • Confident handling of statistical software such as R or Python are an advantage

The Leibniz Centre for Archaeology (LEIZA), a member of the Leibniz Association, is a globally active archaeological research institute and museum with its headquarters in Mainz and further locations in Neuwied and Mayen. Since its foundation in 1852, the museum has been dedicated to material legacies from 3 million years of human history with the aim of understanding human behaviour and actions as well as the development and change of societies.

For the headquarters in Mainz, we are calling for applications for the following position with a starting date of 01.02.2024

research staff member (m/f/d)

within the Emmy Noether Group SEAFRONT, (EG 13 TV-L) Full- or part-time, limited to 3 years

For this purpose, we are looking for a committed staff member who is enthusiastic about new perspectives of archaeological research with a cultural and social science orientation. The position is based in the Emmy Noether research group SEAFRONT of LEIZA.

Your tasks:

  • Planning, implementation and evaluation of archaeological and palaeoclimatic investigations.

  • Sclerochronological analyses through LIBS and oxygen isotope analysis

  • Development and application of statistical models for data analysis

  • Statistical integration of subsistence-relevant (e.g. archaeozoological and archaeobotanical) data with the climatic data of the snail shells.,

  • Remuneration according to remuneration group 13 TV-L if the personal and collective agreement requirements are met.

  • Social benefits in accordance with the regulations of the public service including a supplementary company pension scheme (VBL) as well as a special annual payment in accordance with the requirements of the TV-L

  • Flexible working hours with up to five full or ten half days per month and generous arrangements for working from home
