The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI) is part of the Fraunhofer Society, focuses on the development of innovative approaches in computational sciences and brings them into industrial practice. The institute has currently around 180 employees.

The AI & Data Science team within the Department of Bioinformatics is dedicated to the development and application of cutting-edge data science approaches (specifically machine learning) in early drug discovery, precision medicine and clinical trials. The team and the entire Department of Bioinformatics are internationally well connected and are working closely together with leading European and US institutions from academia and industry in multiple research projects.

What you will do

  • Development & application of innovative algorithms in the field of machine learning, specifically with focus on decision support in medicine

  • Active support of ongoing research projects in the field of precision medicine

  • Presentation of results via scientific publications, workshops and conferences as well as to external collaboration partners

  • Active support of team leader in terms of acquisition of new projects and technology transfer into pharma and biotech industry

  • Active colaboration with and support of other team members, for example regarding publications and code development

    The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis. Ihr Profil


  • PhD and M.sc. with excellent grades in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biomathematics or a similar subject

  • Competitive scientific publication record

  • High level of intrinsic motivation and enthusiasm for translational research connecting academia and industry

  • Clear understanding of statistical and mathematical concepts underlying Data Science

  • Strong passion for Data Science with documented experiences plus an equally strong and documented interest in biomedicine

  • Experience with federated machine learning and generative AI techniques is a plus

  • Documented experience with relevant biomedical data types, e.g. longitudinal clinical data, clinical real-world data such as electronic health records, genomic data, or data from digital healthcare applications

  • Strong programming skills in python and demonstratable experience with Tensor Flow and / or PyTorch

  • Ability to work independently

  • Very good English speaking and writing skills

  • Very good communication skills
